WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO CLEAN SUEDE SHOES
To clean your suede shoes at home, you’ll need to assemble the tools below before getting started:
- Paper or newspaper
- A suede eraser
- A suede brush
- A rough towel
Once you’ve got these to hand, dig out your suede shoes or boots and you’re ready to begin!
A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO CLEANING SUEDE SHOES:
Luckily, it’s really easy to clean suede shoes at home. Follow the steps below whenever your suede shoes or boots are looking a little tired, and give your favourite footwear a new lease of life.
STEP 1: STUFF YOUR SHOES WITH PAPER
To start, fill your shoes with scrunched up paper or newspaper. This will help them to keep their shape as you clean.
STEP 2: USE A SUEDE BRUSH TO REMOVE SURFACE DIRT
To remove any surface-level dirt that has accumulated on your shoes, use a suede brush. Make sure you brush gently and in the same direction. If you’re using a combination suede brush, use the bristled side.
STEP 3: WIPE YOUR SHOES WITH A ROUGH TOWEL
Remove any remnants of dirt with a rough towel. You don’t need to wet the towel beforehand – just make sure it isn’t too soft. Dig out an old towel that’s gone through a few washes, making sure it’s clean before you start.
STEP 4: GET RID OF ANY STUBBORN MARKS WITH A SUEDE ERASER
For stubborn marks or stains, use a suede eraser. These are designed to remove dry stains from the top layer of your shoes without ruining them. Using a suede eraser will also help to restore the texture of the suede, giving you a nicer finish. Applying moderate pressure, simply rub away any remaining marks and scuffs. Apply a little more pressure to areas that are particularly stained.
STEP 5: REPEAT THE PROCESS IF NECESSARY
Repeat the process above if you need to, until any remaining marks on your shoes are completely gone.
STEP 6: GIVE YOUR SHOES ONE FINAL BRUSH AND SPRITZ ON SOME SUEDE PROTECTOR
Brush your shoes down one last time and you’re done!
We suggest spritzing on some suede protector at this stage too. If you’re wearing your suede shoes or boots fairly regularly, it’s worth spraying them with a suede protector every week or so to keep them in good condition.
HOW TO PROTECT SUEDE SHOES
If you want to keep your suede shoes in tip-top condition, you should clean them regularly and spray them with a suede protector as recommended above. But on top of this, there are other things you can do to keep your suede footwear looking its best.
If you’re not wearing your suede shoes and boots as much as usual, then we recommend wrapping them in tissue paper before storing them in a shoebox. Remember to store them in a dark and dry space; suede can become mouldy in moist conditions, and light can discolour it. If suede is left exposed to sunlight, it can shrink or harden too.
And, as with other footwear, you should make sure any repairs to the heels and soles of your shoes are carried out by a professional. It’s always better to get shoes re-heeled or resoled sooner rather than later, and by keeping on top of this, you’ll get years of wear out of them.
